'A lovely hotel, in sparkling form as ever.' Praise comes in 2011 from a visitor
returning to Bryan and Susan Webb's restaurant-with-rooms. Set in well-maintained
grounds in the vale of Edeyrnion, it faces the Berwyn Mountains. Another comment:
'Fabulous: brilliant food and plenty of it. Thoroughly recommended.' Mr Webb has
a Michelin star for his classic cooking; his wife is the 'charming, efficient front-of-house'.
The pace is 'just right' in the two candlelit dining rooms, where the menu might
include sea kale with poached duck egg, truffle dressing; fillet of Welsh Black beef,
au poivre shallot and thyme purée. Breakfast is also of a high standard ('perfect
poached eggs'). 'Like the food, the beautifully furnished public rooms and bedrooms
can be compared with the best in Wales.' A garden suite has patio doors opening on
to a secluded garden area; it is accessible for disabled visitors. A superior room
at the front has an antique four-poster bed, a small sitting area. All rooms have
bath robes and slippers, tea-/coffee-making facilities. In the grounds are an ornamental
pond, a croquet lawn, and a terrace where afternoon tea can be taken. (Gordon Hands)
